Bavarian concordat: Art. 3 on concordat chairs

This part of the concordat allows the Church to fire any theology professor whose ideas or conduct displease them. It also sets up professorships at state universities in Catholic Theology, Philosophy and the Social Sciences,  i.e., subjects suitable for student priests and teachers of Catholic religion. Candidates for these positions are vetted by the local bishop.

Article 3

 § 1. The State maintains at the Universities of Augsburg, Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-University), Passau, Regensburg and Würzburg, as well as at the Bamberg Polytechnic, Faculties of Catholic Theology, to the extent required for research and teaching, as specified in Art. 4 §§ 1 and 2. Each of these Faculties includes at least one professorship for the Pedagogy of Catholic Religious Education.

§ 2. At the Theological Faculties named in § 1 professors and others who are entitled to teach are only appointed by the State or authorised or given teaching contracts if no objection is raised against the candidates under consideration by the responsible diocesan bishop.

§ 3. If one of the proposed teachers faces well-grounded complaints on account of his doctrine or his moral conduct,  the State will at once provide a suitable replacement some other way, irrespective of his rights as a [tenured] civil servant.

§ 4. The State maintains at each of the Universities of Erlangen-Nuremburg and Bayreuth, in a faculty which is responsible for Pedagogy, at least one professorship for Catholic Theology and one for the Pedagogy of Catholic Religious Education.

§ 5. The State maintains at the Universities of Augsburg, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-University), Passau, Regensburg and Würzburg, as well as at the Bamberg Polytechnic, in a faculty which is responsible for Pedagogy, at least one professorship for Philosophy, for the Social Sciences and for Pedagogy, agains whose occupants in terms of their Catholic and Church standpoints no objections are raised. In filling these professorships § 2 applies accordingly.

Faculties of Catholic Theology to the extent required for research and teaching and specified in Article 4 §§ 1 and 2. Each of these Faculties includes at least one professorship for the pedagogy of Catholic religious education.
