Head of the Italian Bishops Conference, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco makes brief statements on the crucifix ruling and Islam in Religious Education classes. He's against both. Excerpts translated from La Repubblica, 9 November 2009.

Crucifixes
Faced with the “surreal” verdict handed down by the European Court in Strasbourg on the presence of crucifixes in Italian classrooms, “the [Italian] government was right to announce an appeal”, said Bagnasco, who spoke of a verdict which was “surprising” and “quite surreal”. He also spoke of a “skewing” toward tiny minorities who risk distancing Europe from its people.
Islam in Religious Education classes
The Italian Bishops’ Conference (CEI) reaffirms its reservations about RE classes teaching Islam. “It’s not under discussion”, Bagnasco explained. “Freedom of religion is for everyone, but the unique nature of schooling and its specific goals are, in a positively secular state, cultural and educational matters”. The bishops reaffirmed that the teaching of Roman Catholicism “is not a lesson in the catechism” but an encounter with a faith which is part of the “historic inheritance of the Italian people”.

Crocifisso. Di fronte alla ''surreale'' sentenza emessa dalla Corte europea di Strasburgo a proposito della presenza dei crocifissi nelle aule scolastiche italiane, ''bene ha fatto il Governo ad annunciare ricorso''. Dice Bagnasco che parla di una sentenza ''sorprendente'' e ''alquanto surreale''. "Un'impostura" di minoranze esigue che rischiano di far allontanare l'Europa dalla gente.
Islam e ora di religione. La Cei ribadisce le proprie riserve sull'ora di religione islamica. "Non è in discussione - ha spiegato Bagnasco - la libertà religiosa di chicchessia, ma la peculiarità della scuola e le sue specifiche finalità che, in uno stato positivamente laico, sono di ordine culturale ed educativo". Il porporato ha ribadito che l'insegnamento della religione cattolica "non è un'ora di catechismo" ma una occasione di conoscenza di una fede che fa parte del "patrimonio storico del popolo italiano".
