[copy] French Secularism (Laïcité)

Secularism prevents the state from supporting any religion or from interfering with it. But the separation of church and state also imposes obligations on religion not to try to trespass on areas that belong to the state. Both sides must respect the boundaries between religion and government. When this restraint is observed, secularism provides a framework for freedom of conscience, tolerance and democracy.
